Why migraines make you so sensitive to light and what helps

For about 40 million Americans with migraines, light isn’t just irritating. Sometimes it feels downright painful.

A study out of Beth Israel Deaconess and Harvard Medical School gathered people with migraines and tested how different colors of light affected their pain. The findings were clear: White, blue, amber and red lights all cranked up the pain, but a narrow band of green light barely made a difference.

The researchers dug deeper, using electroretinography and measuring light-sensitive thalamic neurons. Thalamic pain neurons? They freaked out at blue light, but hardly reacted to green. Brain signals followed the same path; blue and amber set off the pain circuits, green just coasted right by. 

Everyday triggers 

This isn’t just science you read in a lab report. It comes into play every day, especially now that everyone’s glued to screens. One study of nearly 4,900 French students showed a direct link between screen time and migraine risk.

Office lighting has its own reputation, too. Fluorescent tubes, and some LEDs, flicker in ways most people don’t notice, but anyone with migraines knows the trouble it causes. That flicker, paired with harsh white light, explains why many migraine sufferers dread being in open-plan offices.

And don’t forget sunlight: Natural light covers a wide mix of wavelengths, including the blue and amber tones that aggravate migraines most.

Regular sunglasses can backfire
