📐 How to Measure Correctly (AR 600-9)

  • Height: Stand straight without shoes in stocking feet
  • Neck: Measure just below the larynx (Adam's apple), perpendicular to the neck axis
  • Waist (Men): Measure horizontally at the navel (belly button) level
  • Waist (Women): Measure at the narrowest part of the abdomen
  • Hip (Women only): Measure at the widest part of the buttocks/hips as viewed from the side
  • Technique: Keep tape horizontal, snug but not compressing. Take 3 measurements and average to nearest 0.5 inch
  • Breathing: Normal breathing, don't suck in or puff out

📋 U.S. Army Body Fat Standards (AR 600-9)

⚠️ Important Disclaimer: This calculator uses the traditional multi-site circumference-based tape test formula from Army Regulation 600-9. This method was the standard before June 2023, when the Army introduced the simplified one-site tape test. The multi-site method remains available as a confirmation test for 12 months after a failed one-site test. Results are estimates and should not replace official Army assessments. Soldiers who score 540 or higher on the ACFT with minimum 80 points per event are exempt from body fat assessments.
